Gandhi Jayanti 2021:- 152nd birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi

India is celebrating the 152nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, 2021. October 2 is also celebrated as International Day of Non-violence across the world.

In India, the meaning of October 2 is Gandhi Jayanti. Every year, Gandhi Jayanti is observed on October 2. India is celebrating the 152nd birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2, 2021. He is also known as the "Father of the Nation" of India.

He played significant role in the independence of India. October 2 is also celebrated as the International Day of Non-violence across the world. The United Nations General assembly passed the resolution on June 15, 2007 to commemorate the Mahatma Gandhi who had promoted the Non-violence.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat. He was lawyer by profession. The title "Father of the Nation" was given to him by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose for his relentless struggles for Independence.

This year Gandhi Jayanti coincides with Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav which was started by prime minister Narendra Modi on March 12, 2021 on the 91st anniversary of Dandi March. Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav will be celebrated till August 15, 2023, the 77th year of Independence. 

On this day, leaders of the parties pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, New Delhi where Gandhi was cremated. Prime minister Narendra Modi pays floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, Delhi. He tweeted, "I bow to respected Bapu on Gandhi Jayanti. His noble principles are globally relevant and give strength to millions."

The title 'Mahatma' was given to him by India's first Nobel laureate Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. Mahatma Gandhi is also popularly known as 'Bapu'.

Schools, colleges and other institutions organise essay, painting, speech and many other competitions on this day. These competitions are organised to promote the ideas of Gandhi and to remember his struggles which he did during the Indian Independence movement.

In 2019, 150th Gandhi Jayanti was celebrated and prime minister Narendra Modi had released the coin of Rs. 150 on that occassion.

Gandhi Jayanti is a national holiday. All the public institutions, banks and buildings remain closed on this day. Gandhi Jayanti is one of the three national festivals of India, along with Republic Day (26 January) and Independence Day (15 August).
