Google celebrates 99th birth anniversary of Italian astrophysicist Margherita Hack with doodle

In 1995, she had discovered asteroid 8558, which was named in her honour.  She was born on June 12, 1922 in Florence.

Today Google pays tribute to the Italian professor, activist, author and astrophysicist Margherita Hack on her 99th birth anniversary. In the google doodle, she is sitting on the chair and looking into the telescope. In 1995, she had discovered asteroid 8558, which was named in her honour.

Asteroid 8558 is also looking in the doodle. She had also fought case for animal protection and equality for all. She had a deep interest in the asteroids, satellites and stellar atmospheres. She is also known as 'The Lady of the Stars.'

She was born on June 12, 1922 in Florence. She just took one university class in literature and later she switched to physics. In 1964, she moved to Trieste where she created history as she became first Italian woman who earn a full professorship in city's college. She also became first woman director of Trieste Astronomical Observatory.

She had the expertise in observation and interpretation of the spectroscopic characteristics of stars. Besides professor and astrophysicist, she was also a great author.

In 1994, she was honoured with Targa Giuseppe Piazzi for her scientific research. She was awarded Cortina Ulisse prize for scientific dissemination in 1995.

In the year 2012, when she turned 90, the Italian government gave her the most honoured award- Dama Di Grane Croce.

She died on June 29, 2013 at the age of 91.
