Virat Kohli steps down as India's test captain on saturday January 15, 2022. He took this decision just after the test series loss against South Africa. He took to twitter to announce this decision.

The 33 year old Virat Kohli has already stepped down as T20 captain and has been removed from the ODI captaincy by the BCCI before the beginning of India tour of South Africa.

"I have done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to halt at some stage and for me as test captain of India, it's now," Kohli wrote in a statement.

He had become the test captain of India in 2014 when MS Dhoni stepped down as test captain in the middle of the series against Australia.

"It's been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction," Kohli wrote.

Virat Kohli's this decision came when his relations are not good with the BCCI as he has been removed from the ODI Captaincy of India. The controversy erupted when BCCI president Sourav Ganguly and Kohli's statements on ODI and T20 captaincy were at odds with each other.

Under the captaincy of Kohli, India played total 68 test matches and won 40 matches out of them. He is the third most successful test skipper after Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting.

"There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief," Kohli wrote.

"I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can't do that, I know it's not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I can't be dishonest to my team," he further wrote.

He also thanked BCCI for giving him opportunity to lead India for such a long period of time and also to all the teammates who bought into the vision he had for the team from day one and never gave up in any situation.

Virat Kohli also thanked former coach Ravi Shastri and former captain MS Dhoni.

"You guys have made this journey so memorable and beautiful. To Ravi bhai and the support group who were the engine behind this vehicle that moved us upwards in Test cricket consistently, you all have played a massive role in bringing this vision to life"

"Lastly, a big thank you to MS Dhoni who believed in me as a Captain and found me to be an able individual who could take Indian Cricket forward," Kohli wrote.
