Who is Charanjit Singh Channi, the new CM of Punjab?

Congress high command has picked the Charanjit Singh Channi as the new Chief minister of Punjab. Mr. Channi will be the first Dalit Chief minister of Punjab. He is an MLA from Chamkaur Sahib assembly constituency.

After Captain Amarinder Singh's resignation, party high command of the Indian National Congress has picked the Charanjit Singh Channi as the new Chief minister of Punjab. 

On saturday, Captain had sent his resignation to Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit and on sunday evening, Charanjit Singh Channi is become the new CM. Punjab Congress Chief Harish Rawat has announced this on twitter.

Mr. Channi will be the first Dalit Chief minister of Punjab. He took an oath in Raj Bhawan on monday. Along with him, two more ministers Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and Om Prakash Soni also took an oath as a deputy CM. Rahul Gandhi reached late on the oath ceremony.

Who is Charanjit Singh Channi?

》58 years old Charanjit Singh Channi is an MLA from Chamkaur Sahib assembly constituency.

》He belongs to the Dalit community and will be the first Dalit CM of Punjab.

》He is the former minister of 'Technical Education and Industrial Training'.

》He was elected in the Captain Amarinder Singh's cabinet ministry in March, 2017.

》Channi was the leader of opposition in the Punjab assembly from 2015 to 2016.

》He was elected to the Vidhan Sabha from Chamkaur Sahib constituency in 2007 and re-elected in 2012 and again in 2017.

》He was municipal councilor for three terms and later he became president of Municipal Council Kharar for two terms.

》Charanjit Singh Channi was born on April 2, 1972 in the Makrona Kalan village near Chamkaur Sahib.

》His father was Sarpanch of the Gram panchayat of his village and later member of Block Samiti.

》After taking graduation degree, Channi completed his law degree from Punjab University, Chandigarh and then did Masters in Business Administration. Now, he is doing Phd from the Punjab University.

After Captain's resignation, there were speculations over the names of Sunil Jakhar, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa for the new CM but Congress high command picked unexpected name of Charanjit Singh Channi.

This decision of Congress is being considered as political game ahead of assembly elections. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa was the frontrunner as many MLA's chose his name but at the last moment Charanjit Singh Channi has been declared the new CM of Punjab.
