Meet the Padma Shri awardee Tulsi Gowda, an 'encyclopedia of the forests'

:- President of India Ramnath Kovind honoured the Tulsi Gowda with the Padma Shri award on November 8, 2021. She is an environmentalist belongs to Karnataka. Tulsi Gowda came barefoot to receive the Padma Shri award. In the Rashtrapati Bhawan, she greets PM and in return PM Narendra Modi, Home minister Amit Shah and other dignitaries greet her with the folded hands.

The 77 years old Tulsi Gowda has planted more than 30,000 saplings and has been involved in environmental conservation activities for the past six decades. "President Kovind presents Padma Shri to Smt Tulsi Gowda for Social Work. She is an environmentalist from Karnataka who has planted more than 30,000 saplings and has been involved in environmental conservation activities for the past six decades.", President of India tweeted.

 Tulsi Gowda was born in a poor family in 1944 in Honnali village, Karnataka. Her father had passed away when she was just two years old. At a very little age, she started working in the nursery alongside her mother. She got married when she was not even a teen.

Gowda has no formal education because she started working at a little age which became barrier in her education. Despite she has an immense knowledge of environment and forests. She worked for 35 years in the Karnataka forestry department as a daily wage worker.

After that she became the permanent worker of that department and worked for 15 years as a permanent worker. She is known as an 'encyclopedia of the forests' because she has an extensive knowledge of forests and plants.

Tulsi Gowda retired from Karnataka forestry department at the age of 70 but she is still working for the conservation of an environment. She teaches the children of her village about the importance of forests and how to find and take care of seeds.
