Every year World Heart Day is celebrated on 29 September. According to the World Heart Federation, Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the World's number one killer, resulting in 18.6 million deaths a year. So, World Heart Day makes the people aware about the importance of good heart.

The main causes of CVD is use of tobacco, diabetes, high blood pressure, physical inactivity, air pollution, obesity and less common conditions such as Chagas disease and Cardiac amyloidosis.

World Heart Day highlights the importance of heart and prevention of Cardiovascular disease. Timely and regular treatment and healthy lifestyle can cure this disease. World Heart Federation spreads awareness about the perilous Cardiovascular disease.

Covid-19 pandemic added fuel into fire. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, CVD diseases has taken a vulnerable form. 520 million people around the world living with CVD and Covid-19 is heartbreaking for them. Due to the fear of pandemic, they are not attending their routine and emergency appointments and have become isolated from friends and family.

Theme of World Heart Day 2021

World Heart Federation decided the theme of this year- 'Use Heart to Connect'. The healthcare crisis we have all been living through has highlighted an urgent need to find different and innovative ways to connect people to heart health, particularly in lower resource areas and communities.

Harnessing the power of digital health to improve awareness, prevention and management of CVD globally is the WHF's goal for World Heart Day 2021.

Use Heart to Connect is about using our knowledge, compassion and influence to make sure, our loved ones and communities where we are part of have the best chance to live heart healthy lives. It's about connecting with our own hearts, making sure we are fuelling and nurturing them as best we can and using the power of digital to connect every heart, everywhere.

History of World Health Day

In the year 2000, World Health Organisation (WHO) alongwith World Health Federation (WHF) decided to start celebrating World Heart Day. This idea was given by the then president of WHF Antoni Bayes de Luna. Initially, this day was celebrated on the fourth sunday of September. In 2014, September 29 is decided as the date of World Heart Day.

Significance of World Heart Day

World Heart Day highlights the importance of good heart in everyone's life. As per WHF, Cardiovascular disease remains the World's number one killer, resulting in 18.6 million deaths a year. It shows how important maintaining good heart is.

Heart diseases and strokes has been increasing day by day. Even it is the main reason of premature death. Many people under 50 years of age, becoming a victim of heart failure and strokes.

Prevention is the best treatment of heart diseases. Heart can be prevented by quitting tobacco, drinking a plenty of water, physical activity, healthy diet and time to time checkups.
